Naja Haje

Expect the unexpected!

Naja Haje, who's name means Egyptian Cobra, started taking Classical Egyptian belly dance classes from Dinah Kirby of Wilmington, DE in February of 2009.  Shortly after that she began private study from Dinah.  She performed with her classmates in September of 2009, and performed her first solo in October of the same year at the All Season's Hafla. She takes her name from that first solo performance when she decided she was going to undulate out of a basket to the irresistible call of a snake charmer, played by Dinah Kirby, to music by Hossam Ramzy and Phil Thornton entitled "The Cobra's Dance."

In the preceding years, Naja Haje performed both solo and as one of the original dancers of Raqs Devadasi, a troupe founded and directed by Dinah Kirby.  She also spent considerable time in workshops by such notables as Shahrzad, Shiraz, Cassandra, Lotus Niraja, Latifa, Nefertiti and others.  Currently she is studying under the direction of Persia out of Newark, DE.

Naja Haje is a natural "silly person" and can be highly unpredictable.  It was, therefore, inevitable that she should wind up a co-founder of a comedy troupe.  She likes to choreograph and has written her own solos, as well as the performances for The Raq'uettes.
